One of my favourite MCs of the moment is back and getting his nerd on for his latest addition to his release catalogue 'Lady Liberty is Wasted'.
A lot has happened to Phillip Morris since he dropped his last album into the public foray. He's been signed to Redphone Records, has directed a full music video for 'Same Ones and Zeros' a track taken from 'The Truth Campaign', and has been busy campaigning in his local community. Anyone expecting anything other than a glimpse into the life of a weed smoking, alcohol consuming, Milf loving nerd should not proceed, however, those who dare to venture further into the world of Phillip Morris then pop the red pill, sit back and prepare for the audio onslaught.
Over the short time I've been listening to Phillip Mo I'm beginning to see the true genius in his lyricism. From tracks about politicians and social injustice to getting his nerd on and getting fucked over by promoters, he takes us on a complete trip through the life of Chicago nerd and what a ride it is. As I've come to expect every track is concocted with masterful precision, maintaining the highest level of clarity, whilst weaving his lyrics to the headnodding beats that have been presented to him.
As far as collaborations go the only lyrical collaborations on the album come from Number 2 (check out ‘When Animals Attack’) and interludes courtesy of Aedazcate, who's portrayal of a promoter in Tahoe paints a real picture of the struggles facing any artist in the industry (trust me – promoters like this exist and in greater numbers than they should do). This is in stark contrast to the number of producers who have contributed to the release – being able to create such a well blended album from no less than 10 different producers is no mean feat, a testament to the hard work and dedication that is Phillip Morris.
Lady Liberty Is Wasted is available direct from the Phillip Morris Bandcamp http://phillipmorris.bandcamp.com/album/lady-liberty-is-wasted and an even bigger incentive to check it out is that you can set your own price. Yes that does mean it can be free, should you so wish, but do bear in mind that Phillip is a starving artist and every penny made goes back into living and making more hip hop. Support the cause no matter how little you can offer – it’s worth every penny.
